Leonard M Kravitz was a Jewish American soldier who served during the Vietnam War. He was born on October 10, 1946, in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in Long Island. Kravitz was drafted into the US Army in 1968 and was assigned to the 5th Special Forces Group. On March 18, 1971, Kravitz was on a reconnaissance mission near the Vietnam-Laos border when his unit came under heavy enemy fire. Kravitz, who was the unit's radio operator, was hit by shrapnel from an enemy grenade that landed near him. Despite being severely wounded, Kravitz managed to crawl to a nearby bunker and continued to call in artillery fire that helped repel the enemy attack. Kravitz died from his injuries later that day and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the United States' highest military honor, for his extraordinary heroism and selflessness. In 2019, a new military hospital in Colorado was named after Kravitz in honor of his sacrifice.
